IDMC’s estimate of the total number of IDPs in the Republic of Congo is based on an analysis of data collected by the government’s Ministry for Social and Humanitarian Affairs and refers to people displaced in the Pool and Bouenza departments. The ministry is the main source of data on IDPs in the Republic of Congo and collects and publishes its information in collaboration with OCHA. Given that many IDPs reportedly returned from Bouenza to Pool in 2018, the total figure is likely to be an overestimate. IDMC has included these people in our estimate of 107,000 IDPs and not categorised these returns as unverified solutions. This is due to the fact that neither the number of returnees nor their conditions were known.
