IDMC’s estimates of the number of new displacements in Ecuador in 2018 are based on official reports by Ecuador’s National Risk and Disaster Management Unit (UNGRD). They refer to displacements triggered by violence associated with drug trafficking groups in the province of Esmeraldas on the border with Colombia. The people displaced were reportedly able to return and have therefore also been added to the partial solutions category.
