Some 1.4 million IDPs in eastern DRC as early November 2008



Since the end of August 2008, due to large scale fighting between he FARDC (national army) and rebel National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), an estimated 250,000 civilians fled their homes in North Kivu, bringing the total number of IDPs in the province to 1 million.

OCHA, 31 July 2008:
“At the end of June 2008, estimated 1,250,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) had been
registered in the eastern province of North and South Kivu and the district of Ituri (Province Orientale). This total estimate shows that there have not been substantive changes in the situation in these eastern provinces compared to the first quarter of the year. Approximately, 68% of IDPs are found in North Kivu, and 27% in South Kivu. 65,400 persons (4% over the estimated total) were newly displaced in the second quarter of 2008 and/or had been displaced for longer but only became accessible during the reporting period. Most of these IDPs are found in South Kivu. In parallel, some 65,000 people returned to their areas of origin in South Kivu and Ituri in the period April-June 2008.[…]



[Ituri]
63.114 displaced persons in the District of Ituri.
􀂃 71% have been displaced for a period ranging from 8 to 12 months; particularly, in the territories
of Djugu, Irumu and Mahagi.
􀂃 Displacement prior to June 2007 constitutes 29% of the total, located mostly in Aru and Mambasa
territories.
􀂃 No new cases of displacement were registered by humanitarian actors in April - June 2008.

[North Kivu]
854,229 displaced persons in North-Kivu.
􀂃 11,270 new displaced or registered persons by humanitarian actors between April and June
2008, particularly in Kabizo and Tongo (Territory of Rutshuru).
􀂃 59% have been displaced for a period ranging from 3 to 12 months; clearly as the result of the conflict that affected the province throughout 2007, and particularly, in the territories of Masisi, Rutshuru and Nyiragongo (Goma).
􀂃 Displacement prior to July 2007 constitutes 41% of the total, located mostly Beni, Lubero and Walikale.

[South Kivu]
335,783 displaced persons in South-Kivu.
􀂃 54,140 new displaced or registered by humanitarian actors between April and June 2008.
􀂃 35% have been displaced for a period ranging from 3 to 12 months; particularly, in the
territories of Kalehe. A significant number of these IDPs came from North-Kivu.
􀂃 Displacement prior to July 2007 constitutes 49% of the total, located mostly Kalehe and
Walungu.”

HRW, 29 July 2008:
“The first report from the Congo Advocacy Coalition reveals that at least 150,000 people have been forced to flee from their homes due to ongoing fighting since the Goma peace agreement was signed on January 23, 2008.”
