Making the Kampala Convention work for IDPs

In October 2009, the African Union adopted the Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (the Kampala Convention). Building on the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement and the experiences, laws and policies of African states, the Kampala Convention represents an important milestone in the protection of IDPs’ rights.

The Kampala Convention explicitly sets out a role for civil society organisations in providing protection and assistance to IDPs. This Guide provides examples of what CSOs can do to support the Convention’ s implementation, including the incorporation of the Convention into national laws and monitoring states’ compliance with their obligations under the Convention.
