Sanctuary in the city? Urban displacement and vulnerability in Nairobi

Sanctuary in the city? Urban displacement and vulnerability in Nairobi

In recent decades, many cities and towns around the world have seen dramatic population growth, with significant inflows from rural areas. People forcibly displaced by armed conflict, violence or natural disasters have moved to urban areas in search of greater security, better access to basic services and greater economic opportunities.

These studies are part of ongoing work on urban displacement conducted between 2010 and 2011 by the Humanitarian Policy Group at the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), in cooperation with IDMC and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The project explores the phenomenon of displacement in the urban environment and the implications and challenges it poses for humanitarian action.
