Global development leaders recently concluded their annual review of progress toward achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a 15-year framework that came into effect in 2016. Despite longstanding and widespread acceptance that internal displacement is a development issue, it was rarely even mentioned. It should have been central.

This report documents and analyses the scale, process and impacts of displacement caused by development projects and business activities. IDMC shows through nine cases in India that IDPs suffer detrimental impacts and rarely recover. As the world embarks on implementing the post-2015 global development agendas, IDMC calls for people displaced by development projects and business activities to be priority beneficiaries of development work.
