CESCR Submission India 2008

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), established in 1998 by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), monitors conflict-induced internal displacement worldwide. The Geneva-based Centre runs an online database providing comprehensive and regularly updated information and analysis on internal displacement in more than 50 countries.

Profile of Internal Displacement: India

At least 600,000 people are internally displaced in India due to conflicts in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat and the North-East. The ceasefire between India and Pakistan in November 2003 substantially improved the security situation along the Line of Control and the international border between Indian- and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir.
