Despite the apparent move towards peace in Liberia in recent months – witnessed by the signing of the August 2003 peace agreement, the flight into exile of former president Charles Taylor and the deployment of an eventual 15,000-strong UN peacekeeping mission – the situation of thousands of the country’s displaced remains desperate.
