Since 2005, 197,000 people have been internally displaced in the Central African Republic (CAR) due to the armed conflict between the government of François Bozizé and various rebel groups, and because of serious human rights abuses by road bandits known as Zaraguina or coupeurs de route who take advantage of instability, lawlessness and insufficient security provided by the state.

Chad’s current crisis of internal displacement due to conflict is relatively new, dating back to 2006. From the beginning of 2006 to August 2007, approximately 180,000 people were displaced, most of whom were women and children.

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), established in 1998 by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), monitors conflict-induced internal displacement worldwide. The Geneva-based Centre runs an online database providing comprehensive and regularly updated information and analysis on internal displacement in more than 50 countries. It contributes to improving national and international capacities to protect and assist the millions of people around the globe who have been displaced within their own country as a result of conflicts or human rights violations.
