Profile of Internal Displacement: Uzbekistan

Episodes of internal displacement in Uzbekistan have mainly occurred as a result of a Government campaign against suspected supporters of Islamic extremist groups. Today, an estimated 3000 persons are displaced after fighting between Government forces and armed insurgents in the Uzbek-Tajik border areas in August 2000.

A report released in March 2001 indicates that more than 200,000 people could still be considered internally displaced because of the political violence during the 1990s . The exact number is still uncertain as most return or resettlement has been spontaneous and there has been new displacement occurring during recent years.

Profile of Internal Displacement: Israel

Following the United Nations vote on the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and an Arab State in November 1947 and the proclamation of the State of Israel in May 1948, armies from neighboring Arab nations entered the former Mandate of Palestine and fought against Israeli military forces. At the end of the war in 1949, no general peace settlement was achieved (UN GA Resolution 181 of 29 November 1947 & Government of Israel 14 May 1948 & U.S. DOS December 1998).
