CESCR Submission India 2008

The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), established in 1998 by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), monitors conflict-induced internal displacement worldwide. The Geneva-based Centre runs an online database providing comprehensive and regularly updated information and analysis on internal displacement in more than 50 countries.

Despite intense international focus on the human rights situation in Myanmar (Burma) in 2007, forced displacement, as a result of conflict and human rights violations, is ongoing in the country. The government remains the perpetrator of the majority of violations against civilians, particularly those belonging to ethnic minority groups.

UPR Submission Sri Lanka 2008

At least 480,000 people are currently internally displaced in Sri Lanka due to the conflict between government forces and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Historical divisions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority in Sri Lanka have led to the 25-year civil war, which has caused 70,000 deaths and the large-scale displacement.
