How Can We Uncover the Risk of Disaster Displacement at Country Level?

Side-event at COP29

16 November 2024

16.00-17.00 AZT

Capacity Building Hub

The side event will discuss the growing risk of internal displacement due to extreme weather events which expose millions to more frequent and severe hazards like droughts, storms, and floods. In collaboration with the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the United Nations University (UNU), a unique model has been developed to project future displacement trends under changing climate conditions. Experts will present and discuss the model and will engage with the audience in an interactive discussion to gather feedback on the model and discuss how such models can equip policymakers to make informed decisions. The event will also address key capacity-building gaps in understanding and modeling weather-related displacement and will focus on fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among climate and migration professionals, incorporating the perspectives of affected communities.
