As conflicts are intensifying, it is often the same people who are uprooted again and again. Yet the systems meant to protect them are being dismantled.

Sub-Saharan Africa recorded 17.3 million internal displacements in 2025, primarily driven by persistent conflict and violence. For the first time in at least a decade, the number of people living in internal displacement across the region dropped. With 31.7 million IDPs as of the end of the year, sub-Saharan Africa still accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the global total.

The number of internal displacements associated with conflict and violence in the region surged to a new high, accounting for 40 per cent of all conflict movements globally and largely driven by expanding international armed conflict across the region. At the same time, the number of people living in internal displacement declined compared to 2024, partly as result of reported returns in Syria and Lebanon.

After a milder monsoon season with fewer cyclones and floods, the number of disaster displacements in South Asia halved to 4.6 million. Meanwhile, the number of conflict displacements increased nearly 49-fold to 548,000, mostly driven by escalating fighting in Pakistan's border areas. Years-old conflicts and the lasting impacts of disasters left around 14 million people living in internal displacement as of the end of 2025.

The number of people living in internal displacement across the Americas reached a new high of 10.5 million, mostly linked to enduring conflict and violence. While disaster displacements dropped significantly compared to 2024, conflict and violence drove record displacements in Colombia, Ecuador and Haiti.

Conflict and disaster led to the highest levels of both conflict and disaster displacements in East Asia and the Pacific since 2010, climbing to 19.6 million and representing about one-third of the global total. Powerful typhoons and end-of year storms that hit densely populated countries, including the Philippines, China and Indonesia, triggered the highest number of internal displacements in a decade, while conflict displacements also broke new records.
