Getting on the list: the registration of children born to IDPs

All children, including children born to internally displaced people (IDPs), have the right to be registered after birth without discrimination. While birth registration should be universal, registration of children born in displacement is not.

Registering children born in displacement should only take place where IDP registration systems already exist and with the aim of providing assistance, protection and durable solutions.

If done in line with human rights obligations and standards, birth and IDP registration processes can enhance their protection by addressing their specific needs related to their age as well as needs induced by the displacement of their parents.
